Wilson Robert Mendralla Signature irons 3-sw

Shaft:Wilson Fat Shaft steel regular flex

Looks:Robert Mendralla is,like Tom Stites at Nike and Tad Moore at Dunlop,a legend in golf club design. These signature irons of his are handsome clubs indeed and revive memories of some classic Wilson designs of the past like the FG-51 and FG-17.These are cast stainless steel shallow cavities with a split level weighting in the cavity. There is no real offset in any of the irons and the topline is relatively thin,as are the soles. From above these clubs have very much blade like appearance. The steel Fat Shaft is much wider in diameter than a regular steel shaft which is an effort to reduce twisting on mishits in larger sized clubheads. It is not really a major cosmetic distraction at address. The complete set sits very powerfully behind the ball, begging you to let fly.The slightly satin finish on the chrome is well finished and a quality Tour Velvet grip rounds off a nice set of clubs.
Marks:(out of 10) 9

Performance:These clubs are obviously aimed at the better player with their blade like qualities, but their performance indicates a wider appeal. The 3 and 4 irons are powerful clubs that launch the ball on a flat trajectory and for super distance. They may be a little hard to use for the high handicapper, but low handicappers will love them. The mid irons are similar if much more user friendly with a low, controlled ball flight.Indeed if you routinely play on a windy course these clubs would likely benefit your game. The short irons are very accurate and powerful clubs and produce a lot of spin on full approach shots and as with all clubs in the set the focused weight allows for draws and fades on demand. The clubs are good performers from the rough and the only real drawback is the sand wedge, which will be a little cumbersome for purists. The Fat Shaft helps produce a feel that is really solid, even on slight mishits, due to the fact that unlike the graphite version of this shaft the walls of the shaft do not have to be very thin. This leads to a more stable (stiffer) tip and better feedback.

Value:Wilson have discontinued this club and replaced it with the Deep Red Tour, but for under £200 these fine clubs can be bought in good condition on sites such as www.golfbidder.co.uk.They are already something of a collector’s item and will retain some value.

Verdict:These are excellent clubs for the better player but are also a cheap alternative to the improving mid-high handicapper who feels reluctant to lay out £800 on a new set of combos or shallow cavities by Mizuno or Nike. They are not true game improvers ala Callaway Big Bertha or Nike Slingshot but are relatively east to use and are certainly worth a shot.
