Wilson Deep Red Fluid Feel putter 35 inches

Shaft:Wilson steel
Grip:Wilson

Looks:When it comes down to putting and specifically putters the old adige of “not how but how many” rings true.Even among golf’s elite players there is a bewildering array of putter lengths and styles on show and putting still comes down to a “feel” thing at the end of the day.If a putter looks good and feels good in the hands then it is almost a certainty that you are going to hole more than your fair share. This is a cast steel putter with the classic Ping style heel and toe weighting that is by far the most popular look in modern putter design. The finish is a satin chrome which helps reduce glare in bright playing conditions and there is a red polymer (plastic) insert which extends over most of the face.Insert putters are quite popular since the Odyssey stronomic hit the shelves some years ago.The steel shaft gives a nice balance to the putter, which overall feels quite head heavy, and the paddle style grip is thick, which will help reduce unwanted flicking with the hands through impact. This is a quite well made putter that is acceptable on the eye.

Performance:The common complaint with insert putters is that the feel at impact is too soft and putts invariably don’t get to the hole. The extra effort required leads to more hand action and inconsistency in striking, often leading to huge errors in line on long putts. This is particulary the case for polymer inserts.Though this red insert is not as soft as a Callaway White Hot for example it is still softer than stainless steel. The feedback from the face is soft, but a little more crisp than some.Long putts (over 30 feet) struggle to get around the hole and a good deal of effort is required to get the ball rolling well. From 6 feet and in alignment is easy and the putter sits so well behind the ball that you feel as if you can’t miss. This is a strange anomaly! The rolled leading edge makes use from fringe grass quite easy and overall performance, while mixed,is perfectably acceptable.

Value:£70-£100 (there are 5 models to chose from) represents poor value versus such rivals as Ping G2.The resale and trade in value of these will not be all that good as there is little use on pro tours and therefore no recognition among the golfing public.

Verdict:Uninspired offering that will be best suited to players with smooth putting tempos who putt on quick greens. If you putt on slow greens (or think your greenkeeper is a lazy so and so who only cuts the greens every other day) then look elsewhere to the excellent Ping range or beg your partner to present you with a Scotty Cameron as a gift!
