Club:Wilson Dyna Power PH wedge 58 degree loft

Shaft:Wilson steel

Looks:The Dyna Power name is a famous name in golfing history. It was made famous in recent years by Ben Crenshaw in his victories at Augusta.Time was when many Wilson clubs were to be seen on tour, but now the main man is Irish touring pro Padraig Harrington (the PH in the club here).Like the great Crenshaw before him,Harrington is renowned as a short game magician who can up and down the ball from anywhere and he apparently helped to design this wedge. It comes in only 1 loft option (58 degree),which was the traditional loft of a sand wedge.By today’s standards it sits between a sand wedge (56 degree) and lob wedge (60 degree) so it is an obvious attempt to curry favour with players who want to carry only 2 wedges in the bag (pitching wedge of 46-48 degree and dual wedge such as this). This is a cast steel clubhead that is classic in looks. It features a compact head, lack of offset, thin topline, high chrome finish and a traditional groove pattern. It also features a widish rolled sole which is and obvious attempt to improve the versatility of the club as is will need to be used from both sand and tight lies. The cosmetics are first class and the first impression is excellent.

Performance:You would expect this club to be versatile and it does not dissapoint. The 58 degrees of loft means that full length swings produce 70-90 yards at max,but give a high floating trajectory and the ball sticks to the green with superb spin. The widish sole and good deal of bounce mean the ball is extracted from rough effortlessly and with a lot of control,as though the club is cast is has a forged feel similar to a Nike Chrome or Mizuno Black Ox.The rolled sole means that greenside bunker shots are a cinch and the club opens up easily to give plenty of loft for Phil Michelson like parachute lobs (dream on!).If there is any gripe it is that the club feels a little light in the hands and those who prefer a heavier feel may be drawn to Callaway Vintage ar TaylorMade RAC.

Value:£80 is very fine indeed. It is even better value when one considers that a good many premium forged sets at around £800 do not include a sand wedge, let alone a lob wedge. This club will save the need to purchase both (at a cost of up to £200) and is versatile enough to hit any shot you need.Sweet!Trade in value may also be good as vintage Wilson clubs are always in demand by collectors.

Verdict:If you are a good player looking for a versatile wedge look no further. If you are a budget conscious player looking for a good dual wedge look no further. If you like classic looking and high performing wedges…………well, you get the message!
