Club:Wilson Deep Red 2 Distance 15 degree 3 wood
Shaft:Wilson Fat Shaft regular flex
Looks:The original Deep Red fairway wood model was considerably different from this newer version. The head was red in colour and smaller in size than this black headed stainless steel version. The head is also lower profile (shallower) and the smooth sole design of the original gives way to a modified sole design in the Deep Red 2,with backweighting being given by means of an “extension” of the sole plate. In theory this should drive weight low and deep into the clubhead and aid playability,a fault in the original model. The new Fat Shaft is a little narrower in diameter than the original and this is in deeping with the slightly smaller looking head. There also seems to be a little more stiffness in this new shaft than the original model, though it still feels soft in comparison to many manufacturers regular flex proprietary shafts, notably TaylorMade. The grip is a fine Tour Velvet model which is a popular and reliable choice.

Performance:This is a club that will best suit the mid handicap player. The club sits beautifully behind the ball, square and with plenty of loft to be seen at address. The low profile head reminds one of Orlimar models of the past and it inspires confidence in getting the ball airborne. The combination of Fat Shaft and steel head combines to give a muted sound at impact and fans of Callaway in particular will not like this.Trajectory is quite penetrating for a 15 degree and tends towards the strong 3 wood range (13 degree).Fairway lies are no problem to this club, but performance from the rough is only average despite low profiles and deep weighting.Overall distance is about average, but big hitting TaylorMade V steel may be more to the liking of many.Off a low tee this is an effective club on tight driving holes and long par3’s (there seems to be 4 of those on each course nowadays!) as it does not seem to fade or slice much, even though it is quite easy to deliberately conjure up balls that move each way with this club.A pretty good allrounder.

Value:£169 in graphite is pretty much on the button.Resale and trade in on Wilson clubs is reasonable and this should be the case here.
Marks:8
Verdict:A good club for the mid-high handicap player. The low shooter will look for more penetrating flight (TaylorMade,Sonartec, etc.) while the higher handicap player will get more help from Callaway models.
