Club:Wilson Deep Red original driver 10.5 degree loft

Looks:When this original Deep Red driver came to the market some years ago now it was considered to have quite a large titanium head at 305cc.How the physics of club design,particulary driver design,has changed.Now 400cc seems to be about the norm!The incandescent red crown and body of this driver made it a real eyecatcher and the looks are still superb.As with most colours other than black on a driver head it provides nice contrast with the face and frames the ball nicely.The overall feel in the hands is that this is an extremely light club,but that it is nicely balanced for all that.There is a single “w” in the centre of the crown to aid alignment.The Fat Shaft designed by renowned shaft manufacturers Graffalloy is extremely wide and is designed to help forgiveness on mishits,the theory being that a large clubhead requires a larger diameter shaft.The grip is a quality Tour velvet that will please any player and the overall look of the club is classy and compact.

Performance:The club sits square (no toed in effect here) behind the ball and the temptation is to cut loose and try to murder the ball.This is a mistake.The Fat shaft plays very soft for it’s flex and strong swings (ok jerky swings!) will produce wild hooks and pulls.Just let the club do the work!The Deep Red produces a mid trajectory that sends the ball out a good distance with plenty of run.The shaft is really stable on mishits,which are absorbed with no vibrations to the hands,and toe and heel mistakes fly well.Impact sound is more solid than explosive while still maintaining a healthy titanium “pwwinng”.Shaping the ball is not high on this clubs list of pros due to the shaft and low weightingThis is a good club for the mid-high handicapper who lacks consistency from the tee.

Value:A discontinued club,it can be found in good shape on such exchanges as the excellent www.golfbidder.co.uk for around £70,a fraction of the cost of new and in many cases inferior drivers.

Verdict:A fine club for the mid-high handicap player who is looking for a bargain.be sure to go for a flex stiffer than normal and also maybe a degree or so less loft and be amazed at the length of your best strikes.
