Club:Wilson Deep Red 2 distance driver 10.5 degree loft

Shaft:Wilson Fat Shaft regular flex

Looks:The original Deep Red driver had an almost cult following among club players. It had a fine combination of good looks, performance and forgiveness and was certainly a fine club. But like so many manufacturers Wilson feel the need to cash in on the name recognition factor and give us a new generation club that is a good deal different from it’s predecessor. The head here is a beautifully finished black as opposed to the red of the past and is a whopping 400cc of titanium as opposed to the 305cc of the original. The Fat Shaft is there in a black finish and the club is topped off by a proprietary Tour Velvet grip (an industry favourite). The sole of the club features deep backweighting in the form of an elongated sole piece. This is obviously an attempt to improve lift and forgiveness on offcentre hits. The overall look is different in many ways to the original, but is probably an upgrade. The clubhead sits square and powerfully behind the ball and it’s size breeds confidence. This is a handsome club.

Performance:A smooth tempo was the order of the day when using the original Deep Red and the same is true here. The regular flex shaft is EXTREMELY soft and is almost like a stick of liquorish.Any attempt to force the club will lead to severe hooks and long pulls. An even tempo swing produces fine results however. The impact sound is solid while being metallic enough to please the many high handicappers who demand this of a driver.Teeing the ball high is another must as the deep clubhead, although possessing a low weighting, seems to have a high centre of gravity. This means that the lower the ball is teeded up the harder it is to get airborne. When it is teeded high enough the ball soars off on a medium-high trajectory for fine carry and reasonable run. This is not the club of choice for the shotmaker who enjoys hitting the ball both ways.the combination of headsize and soft shaft makes hitting fades a major struggle.Mishits are handled very capably and the Fat Shaft prevents a lot of twisting on toe hits in particular,so that minimal distance loss occurs.

Value:£279 places this right up against such as Nike, but below TaylorMade and Callaway and while this is good value, most with £279 to spend will be lured to the Nike camp due to extra media exposure.Resale and trade in value should be ok as the club will be easy to pass on to a new user by any club pro.

Verdict:A good value, good looking and,in the correct hands, a high performing driver.Buy a flex stiffer than usual due to soft shaft. If you are a slicer (come on admit it!) this could be the club for you,but low shooter will look for more workable clubs from the stables of Titleist and TaylorMade.
